How to Perform Lying Leg Curls

Follow these steps to properly perform lying leg curls :

  1. Set the weight on the leg curl machine.
  2. Lie face down on the leg curl machine, hooking your ankles under the bar so that the pad is behind your ankles. With your hands grasp the handles on the underside of the machine.
  3. Slowly curl your legs from the starting straight leg position until they are curled at about a 90 degree angle.
  4. After a brief pause slowly lower the weight back to the starting position.
  5. Continue to raise and lower the weight without resting until you have completed the appropriate number of reps. You should be near muscle failure at the end of the set.

Precautions when doing this exercise:

  1. Keep your stomach down flat on the bench and don't raise your fanny up in the air.
  2. If you need a spotter they can spot under the bar or under your ankles.
  3. Keep the weight in control throughout the movement. Moving too fast, both on the up and down motions, will negate the effectiveness of the exercise and risk injury.
  4. As always, don't hold your breath during the exercise.
